The Grand Prize winner of the 10th Annual Great American Song Contest
is Rachael Sage, a songwriter and multi-media performer who has
written songs from the age of five.
Her winning
song, "Hunger In John," won accolades from contest judges,
who praised the song's "refreshing originality, vibrant lyrical
imagery" and "exceptional melodic composition."
"The
lyric of the song came from a composite of several real relationships,"
says Rachael. "I guess you could say it was imaginative in the
details but true in essence."
Rachael
began creating songs on her parents' piano when she was a child. Although
her parents were not musical, they were supportive of her musical interests,
and took her to New York to see many Broadway musicals, a style of music
which would influence Rachael's own songwriting later on.
Growing
up, Rachael continued to develop her approach to songwriting, finding
inspiration in the songs of Elvis Costello, Buddy Holly, The Beatles
and David Bowie.
Rachael says she writes most of her songs "in her head," then
fine-tunes them later on the piano. She performs them at various venues,
from concert halls to house concerts.
Lacking
the support of a large record company, Rachael decided several years
ago to organize her own self-managed label, MPress Records. Since then
she has produced a series of excellent CDs and, in the process, set
an example for ambitious independent artists everywhere.
