Artist: Jenna Drey
Songwriter
and vocalist Jenna Drey is a success story just waiting to happen.
She’s smart. She’s talented. She’s willing to work
hard to reach her goals. And she knows the value of creative collaboration.
That’s
how she and co-writer Kevin Churko won top honors in the 6th
Annual Great America Song Contest, impressing music-industry
judges with their outstanding original song Impossibility.
“It’s
funny to think that my winning song started out with a completely different
lyric,” says Jenna. “After I recorded my first demo of the
song, I sat back and listened carefully, and it was clear to me that
my original lyric really didn’t really fit the music.
“I
decided I needed to write different words to match the uplifting, positive
vibe of the music,” says Jenna. “I’m glad I did because
the song became much stronger in the process.”
Raised
in Houston and now a resident of Miami, Jenna says there are important
benefits to winning a song contest. “It’s great to be acknowledged
and win prizes, of course, but it’s also important to have your
work validated by people in the industry,” she says.
A fan of
the pop-dance bands of the 80s, Jenna knew she wanted to be a singer
when she was eight-years-old. When she shared her ambitions with her
mother, her mother told her "If you want to be a singer, you're
going to need to learn to write songs.”
From that
point on, Jenna made a commitment to study the craft of songwriting,
reading books by Sheila Davis and others. “I recognized very early
that songwriting was a craft, something that deserved concentrated effort,
not something that just popped out of your mind.”
That kind
of dedication makes Jenna Drey a likely candidate for success in the
music world, and already she’s weighing offers and making plans
for a new album.
Nile Rodgers,
producer of artists such as Madonna, David Bowie and Duran Duran, has
already signed on to help her with some of the production chores.
Jenna is
also starting to get radio play in some regions of the county, particularly
on WBMX-FM in Boston where one of her songs has been adopted as the
battle song for the World Champion Boston Red Sox.
In addition
to the Great American Song Contest, Jenna has also
won other high-profile competitions and events.
“I
feel like I’m starting a very exciting time in my musical life,”
says Jenna. “I feel like something wonderful is right around the
corner.”
